Finding Balance in Challenging Times

The Power of Inner Peace
Whether you already have go-to practices or are just beginning to explore, it’s never too late to create habits and routines that support your inner peace. When we feel peaceful within, that calm radiates outward, helping others shift their state of mind. In this way, cultivating inner peace becomes an act of service—a quiet, powerful way to impact the world.
My Personal Toolkit for Resilience
Personally, the tools I return to again and again include qi gong, yoga, meditation, time in nature (hiking, gardening, etc.) and—believe it or not—weight lifting! Let’s take a closer look at why these practices are so impactful.
Routine: The Foundation of Balance
According to Ayurveda, the ancient healing science of India, the body loves routine. (It’s the mind that resists it!) Routine provides stability and rhythm, which helps the body function more smoothly—whether it’s waking and sleeping at consistent times, or eating meals on a regular schedule rather than grazing all day. When we layer supportive tools into these routines, we amplify their benefits.
A Glimpse Into My Morning Practice
Each morning I start my day with a large glass of water and lemon, followed by a cup of tea and a 12-minute “Energization Exercise” routine—essentially gentle yoga—while listening to calming music. I then settle into my meditation chair for more or less 20+ minutes of breathwork, mantra, and gratitude practice. This helps me begin my day feeling calm, connected, and centered.
From this grounded state, I’m better able to respond to life’s challenges, rather than react to them. I feel like I’m in the eye of the hurricane, rather than being swept away by it. Weight lifting, too, gives me a sense of strength and capability—qualities that serve me well in uncertain times.
How You Start Your Day Matters
Contrast that with jumping straight into the news first thing in the morning. That often leads to starting the day feeling anxious, overwhelmed, or fearful—not exactly a foundation for navigating traffic, tense conversations, or unexpected stress. Without grounding, I’m much more vulnerable to being tossed around by negative emotions.
What Brings You Back to Center?
Your tools might look different—gardening, dancing, journaling, creative writing, or cooking—whatever helps you access your inner joy and sense of calm.
There are so many supportive tools available to help us navigate these times—breathwork (as simple as breathing deeply and slowly for 2 minutes), creativity, ritual, community support, or simply stepping outside to feel the sun on your face. The key is to find what speaks to you. What nourishes your heart? What quiets your mind?
Start Small, Stay Consistent
Of course, I’ll always advocate for the benefits of mindful movement and meditation. There are many styles of meditation available, so it’s possible to find one that suits you. If you’re new, try starting with just 10 minutes a day using a guided practice. I personally like the app Insight Timer—there’s a free version with a lot of excellent options.
A helpful question to ask yourself is: Does this activity expand me and make me feel good, or does it contract me? Or is it neutral?
Are you reacting to life, or responding with grace and ease? If you find yourself often in the former category, consider building a routine around the practices that support you. If you’re not sure what those are, try a simple experiment: each evening, jot down what helped you feel uplifted and what left you feeling depleted. The following week, create a routine that includes more of the uplifting activities. Even small changes—like scheduling a walk or time in the garden—can have a big impact.
Support Is Here When You’re Ready
Maybe you already have tools, but only use them sporadically. Try weaving them more consistently into your day. Or begin by simply creating structure around your sleep and meals—this alone can help settle both body and mind.
As an Ayurvedic practitioner, life coach, and qi gong/yoga instructor, I’d be honored to help you develop a personalized plan that strengthens your resilience and helps you shine—even in uncertain times. I welcome new clients and offer a sliding scale for services.
Attending regular qi gong or yoga classes can also be a powerful way to stay grounded and connected. These practices offer not only physical benefits, but also a sense of community and a calm rhythm to your week. If you’re looking to deepen your routine with supportive movement and mindful presence, I’d love to see you in class.
What You Cultivate Within, You Share With the World
And remember: what you cultivate within you is reflected all around you. Let’s choose to radiate peace instead of chaos.
